Miranda Cleary


In these recent paintings my focus is on the difficulties of interpreting the framed image. I am interested in how previously seen images: be it media, film, art, etc. colour the interpretation of both new images and surroundings, denying the possibility of an absolute subject within the frame. The democratisation of the photographic image has led in my practice to a questioning of the relationship between painting, the image and meaning. Whilst my paintings are based on photography, it is the act of looking, i.e. what we see and (choose to) not see that fascinate me particularly.
