Artist Statement:

'Out of Order' (2005) is researching patterns from the Rietveld Library collection.

A library is a place of order precisely catalogued for the user to navigate efficiently within it. Still, information about subject, author and year of publication only offers a somehow limited view on the content of the collection. By browsing the Rietveld library with different criteria (ranging from content-specific elements over visual formalities to use and maintenance) we created irrational orders seeking to reveal hidden aspects of this peculiar collection. Every volume has been taken down from the shelf, twisted and turned in order to learn about the general state of this library.

Jury Statement:

In a collaborative project on reproduction, initiated by the department of graphic design and photography, Laurenz Brunner and Marianne Vierø have meticulously dissected the library of the school in a project called 'Out of Order'. With 'Out of Order' they have discovered and collected invisible patterns in our libraries' books, revealing formerly unknown qualities of the library. We see collections of faded back covers, symmetrical pages, books that have never been lent, authors' portraits, pages to be read in other directions and more. Each selection has been exhibited in the displays on the first floor, accompanied by a poster announcing the exhibition. Now they are showing the entire work in yet another form, but once again this seems to be exactly the right form.
The strength of the 'Out of Order' project lies in its execution: in the profound interest of the two students in the material, and in combining the scientific with the coincidental. But most of all in the energy and enthusiasm of Laurenz and Marianne when working on this project, which inspired many of us in the art of turning problem into opportunities.
