Rob Arbouw (1953)

Op horizontaal getrokken kleurbanen schildert Rob Arbouw in heftige kleurstellingen wezens die zich met vrolijke, je raadt het al, kleurige zaken bezig houden. Anderzijds toont hij op deze site zijn bekende etherische verschijningen en mythologische wezens als robuuste reuzen, satyrs op haast zwarte ondergronden. Verschillende archetypen worden in deze raadselachtige gestalten verenigd. In contrast hiermee blijken de klein intieme lagunen, randmeren, stilte te bieden. Nog meer contrast geven de paneeltjes van werk dat voor een op handen zijnd kinderboek gemaakt is, over een stel kabouters die hun dromen afgenomen zien worden door een doodse steendame. In een Droomvertelfeesttent leert zij van de kleine wezentjes dromen waardoor ze verandert in de Maandame Sprankeltje. Het aloude thema over verandering. Zijn wezentjes zijn kleurrijk, liefdevol en meestal verre van luguber. In dit land kun je bijkomen van de huidige wereld. Een klein aantal evenwel is doordrenkt van zwarte romantiek. Ieder werk uit de gestaag groeiende lineaire serie kan als muurschildering uitgevoerd worden.

Walking in this landscape Rob Arbouw's black series of paintings, of black-grounded portraits of figures unknown, of figures reminiscent of a once-known mythology, perhaps Toltec or Tibetan or Druid or African. The black might be an actualisation of his father, who was a miner, and of the mystery of fatherhood; the colours a glowing forth of life forces, an energetic arborescence of surprise and chance.
