Through my work as an artist I try to create structure to experience my direct surroundings. I always try to find the point where a given context, mostly a space that is allotted to me, turns from something that is taken for granted as natural into a non-given. To make something seen that was previously hidden is often key in this process. Curious about my work? Take a look at www.kimrikken.nl (Dutch and English version online)
As a cultural entrepreneur I am very interested in the relationship between the different players in the Visual Arts (e.g. artists, galleries, artist foundations, funds, etc.). How do these players affect and influence one another? What effects does Dutch cultural policy have on the field as a whole and on the individual players?
With a background in international business studies and a key interest in arts funding and policy I keep track of developments in the field. One of my articles on this theme has been published in Boekman magazine in the fall of 2010. To further develop in this field I followed a training at Binoq Atana (Atana Culture programme) for future boardmembers in the cultural sector and am currently head of the board of the Association of Original Printmaking and treasurer at Muzenis in Amsterdam.
To do justice to my business background and enhance necessary business skills (that may in time prove useful in the cultural field) I work at Hemels Customer Media as account manager for sponsored media such as KLM Flying Dutchman and Mercedes-Benz Magazine. Within the commercial team, I have been trained in marketing&sales.
